Starting a Dividend Portfolio

Back in 2020 I created a new demat account on Angelbroking. The idea was to use Angelbroking account to make long term investments since there’s no way to track, tag, categorise, label on Zerodha to distinguish between on short term trades to Angelbroking. In the end my portfolio on Zerodha just become difficult to manage.

However, I made no progress since I just didn’t have the bandwidth. I didn’t have the bandwidth as I was trading way too much. Last year I was trading at least 6-7 times a week and I have brought that down to 1-2 trades a week and only when there’s an opportunity. This gives me more bandwidth to think of long term investments.

I have always been fascinated by dividend investing. I’ve done my research and honestly it doesn’t make sense to do dividend investing specially when you’re young. However, I just want to try it out. So far I’ve made 2 investments in GAIL and ITC 😜

I cheated a bit here. I used up the profits from my stock market series to make these investments. I didn’t transfer amount from Zerodha to Angelbroking. I transferred it from my bank account but the INR was accounted for from the Zerodha brokerage account.

Do not expect this series to be updated often. The next few months will go into figuring out how to track dividends and how to optimize the dividends. I’ve seen dividends tracker spreadsheet from Andrei Jikh and The Joseph Carlson Show, however, I’m not really satisfied. Joeseph has moved to M1 Finance and I’m sure M1 Finance provides some great tools to track it. How I wish M1 Finance was available in India. Until it’s available we will have to optimize.

If you know of any good tracker for India, do let me know here.

Please note that none of this should be taken as advice to buy. You should contact your financial advisor for such decisions if you’re unsure of it. I’m only sharing my thought process on this blog.

I have started a Patreon page where I discuss the Apartment deal and how I’m managing the estate. Please subscribe if this is something the interests you.
